Settlement cropmarks (Branxton)

Cropmarks of a possible Iron Age or Romano-British settlement were recorded at NT 893363. [See parish folder B8]. (1)

Cropmarks of a double ditched rectilinear enclosure were recorded from the air in 1978 at NT 892363. (2)

Aerial photographs show cropmarks of a double-ditched enclosure with at least four hut circles and two entrances. Also single-ditched outworks. (3)

An Iron Age enclosed settlement, round house, ditches, maculae and field boundaries are visible as cropmarks on air photographs centred at NT 8924 3630. The enclosed settlement, at NT 8921 3631, is double-ditched and subrectangular in form. There are two entrances on the south-eastern side. It measures 105m NE-SW by 68m NW-SE and encloses an area of 0.67ha. Inside the enclosure are two ditches of uncertain function and a round house measuring 11m in diameter. Two maculae also lie within the enclosure and may represent the hollow floors of other round houses.
Two sections of narrow ditch are visible running parallel to the north-east and south-west sides of the enclosure and appear to be an annexe. These lie approximately 13m outside the enclosure. Other fragments of ditch, possibly field boundaries, are visible to the south of the enclosure. Although the relationship is not clear the site may relate to the field system to the south (NT 83 NE 67/ UID 1384059). (4)(5a-b)

General association with HER 788 (ditches), HER 34440 (Iron Age or Romano-British field system). (5)
