Allenheads lead mine consists of several veins. One horse level (Fawside) was begun in 1776; one water level (Haugh) begun in Sir William Blackett's time; four underground water wheel engines; seven whimseys (one underground); and a large crushing mill. (3)

The Beaumont Mine Portal is a relatively new adit to the old workings beneath the adjacent and disused Gin Hill shaft.

An archaeological assessment was undertaken by Vindomora Solutions, Alan Williams Archaeology and Ian Forbes as part of an overall management plan for the former lead-ore works, adjacent buildings and for the Craigshield powder-house at Allenheads in East Allendale. The assessment is intended to inform and guide the long-term maintenance of these sites. It focussed on much of the 19th century WB Lead ore-processing works along the River East Allen including the washing floors and a row of bouseteems which are scheduled. It also included the grade II listed sawmill sitting above the bouseteams, a length of the East End Burn and its channelled course to the west of the sawmill part of a very substantial dump of mine and ore processing waste rising to the east of the channel and Craigshield Powder House/Magazine.
