Haltwhistle Gas Works (Haltwhistle)

Haltwhistle Gas Light Company Incorporated was founded in 1856. Gasworks appear on the 1st edition OS map at the site of the manor corn mill (NY 76 SW 43). (2)

NY 711644. The Haltwhistle Gas Light Co.Ltd. was formed in 1856, however, another account suggested the town was lit at an earlier date of 1852. The gasworks expanded in 1881 with the construction of a new gas holder. In 1914 the annual make was 14m. Vested in the Northern Gas Board from the Haltwhistle Gas Light Company, Ltd at which point the gasworks were only using horizontal retort. The gasworks closed in the 1960s. The two surviving buildings are the manager's house and, beside it, the small yellowbrick pump house. (3)
