Little Shield Settlement (Bardon Mill)

Three or four stone hut circles can be seen on aerial photographs of this site, along with field boundaries. They are inside a roughly rectangular enclosure on the edge of a rock outcrop. Sites such as this usually date to the Iron Age or Roman period. (1-3)

The remains of a settlement and field system of probable Prehistoric or Roman date are visible as earthworks on air photographs. The settlement, centred at NY 7913 6788, is situated on a ridge of land at Little Shield and comprises rectilinear enclosures containing the remains of possible hut circles. A field system consisting of boundary banks and cord rig exists to the west, south and east of the settlement.
Just to the south-west of Little Shield, another Iron Age/Roman settlement and field system occupies the ridge at Green Brae (see NY 76 NE 219). (4a-b)
