Thorngrafton Shaft Mounds (Bardon Mill)

NY 78006672 Thorngrafton Common shaft mounds. One star rated. 30+ shaft-mounds of differing size and shape lying on upland marginal land. Some have pronounced collars of spoil, whilst others appear as small shallow depressions. Surface evidence of the winding and pumping arrangements probably survives around the mouth of the shafts and undisturbed underground workings are also suspected. Allegedly of Roman date although probably supplied coal to 19th century limekilns to the north. (1)

Roman (43 to 410)
