Causeway House lime kiln (Henshaw)
This lime kiln is now in ruins. Its walls have fallen down and much of the stone has been reused elsewhere. Limestone was burnt in kilns to make lime which was used to improve the quality of soil or make cement. (1-3)
Post medieval disused lime kiln (NY 7635 6666) and associated quarry lies on the north bank of Brackies Burn. The small quarry that lies to east of the kiln, centred at NY 7642 6666, is probably the source of the limestone. A trackway, depicted on the Ordnance Survey map, leads from the lime kiln to the road to the south near Causeway House. (4a-b)
