Bradley bastle (Bardon Mill)
[NY 77626797] Bradley [T.I.] (1)
The ruins of a 'stonehouse' or bastle (3) are recorded at Bradley in 1541. Foundations of considerable buildings may still be traced. (2-4)
Bradley is an 18th/19th century farmhouse. There are no apparent remains of a bastle in its fabric, or in the immediate vicinity. (5)
A residence certainly existed at Bradley in 1307 when Edward I spent two nights there. This may have been the same building which existed in 1541. Dodds suggests that the Bradley bastles are later 16th century, possibly by Henry Bradley. There are traces of foundations in the traingular field to the north of the farm, including one definite, and one possible, bastle. (6a)
