Turret 39b (Steel Rigg) (Henshaw)
[NY 7504 6758] Turret G.S. (Site of) Excavated A.D.1912 (1)
Turret 39b is on the western side of Peel crag, close to the former farmhouse of Steel Rigg. It was excavated in 1909 and found to have been abandoned, dismantled, and its recess built up at the end of the 2nd century. (2)

After the turret was demolished the extra-narrow wall was constructed across the site. The turret shows a similar sequence of construction, repair and demolition as in other turrets in this sector. (5)
The turret was excavated in 1912 and found to measure 16 feet 6 inches E-W along the N wall, 16 feet 5 inches along the S wall; N-S along the W wall the turret measured 18 feet 8 inches along the E wall. The doorway was not found but there had been much robbing on the E side (6b). The site of the turret was located at NY 7505 6758 but there are no visible remains. (6a)
