Vallum between Steel Rigg and Caw Gap (Henshaw; Melkridge)
The vallum runs along the low ground south of Hadrian's Wall. It is an earthwork feature with a ditch about one metre deep and mounds on both sides about 30 centimetres high. However, near Shield on the Wall the ditch is two metres deep and the mounds one metre high. In some places, later features have been built on top of the vallum, such as the B6318 road at Twice Brewed and part of Winshield Farm buildings. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
