Roman quarry and inscription (Haltwhistle)
[NY 7139 6613] Inscribed Rock found A.D. 1844 [T.I.] (1)
In 1844 Mr Clayton noted the letters LEG.VI.V. inscribed on the rock face of a quarry beneath the refuse of which were buried the remains of the west rampart of Haltwhistle Burn fort [NY 76 NW 15]. The inscription records the use of the quarry by the Sixth Legion presumably while cutting stones for the wall. (2)
No further information. The quarry is disused and its face overgrown. (3)
Seen by Clayton in 1844 but soon destroyed. Full details of inscription etc. (4)
The quarry was recorded at a scale of 1:10000 from aerial photographs as part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site Mapping Project. (5a)
Disused, overgrown Roman quarry. See RCHME 1:1000 survey of Haltwhistle Burn Fortlet (NY 76 NW 15), Oct 1984 for details. Presumably related to the building of the Wall as it destroys part of the defences of the Fortlet which was in use during the earlier, Stanegate, phase of the frontier. (5b)
