Between approximately 2000 and 2500 years ago, during a period that archaeologists call the Iron Age, people built an enclosure on the north-east facing slopes of a hill, overlooking the North Tyne and Lewie Hope valleys. The enclosure was surrounded by a bank, which is all that can be seen today. The enclosure may have been a defended settlement or an enclosure only used as a place of safety from time to time.
