Kershope Castle is first mentioned in a document written in 1249, when it was owned by a man named Robert of `Gresshope'. The castle was built on a south-west facing slope, overlooking the North Tyne Valley. Today, all that can be seen of the castle is mound surrounded by a ditch and an outer bank. A small section of stonework, possibly part of a tower, survives on the top of the mound. Kershope Castle is a Scheduled Monument, protected by law.
