Shieling (Thirlwall)
NY 65637057 (102) Poorly preserved shieling 20ft north-east/south-west by 9-1/2 feet.
NY 65637057 (103) Lying over the south west end of (102) and 25-3/4ft north-east/south-west by 11ft with an entrance in the north-west, north-east of centre. There is an annexe at the south west with perhaps another at the north-east.
NY 65707057 (104) 208 east of (103) and 21ft north-east/south-west by 11-1/2ft evident as overgrown foundations. (1)
Situated at the south side of the River Irthing in a bend of rough pastureland the remains of two shielings (A and B).
'A'NY 65617058 is visible as ill-defined footings of a sub-divided building 13m north-east/ south-west by 3m between the centres of a turf-covered stony wall 0.8m wide 0.2m maximum height. A depression in the wall in the west may be an entrance. There is no trace of any other building overlying its south-west end. (See photograph from north-east).
'B' NY 65627057. Evident as rectangular footings 5.5m north-east/south-west by 2.5m transversely between the centres of an ill-defined turf-covered wall of indeterminate width but about 0.2m maximum height. (See photograph from north-east).
Surveyed at 1:10,000. (2)
The three shielings were visited and found to be as stated above. (102) has a possible entrance in north side. (104) entrance in south side. (Noted by the Field Research Group of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle). (3)
Site appears to be visible on aerial photographs of the area. (4)
The feature was difficult to positively identify on the photography which was available to the Hadrian's Wall NMP project (1946 verticals). (5a)
