Hethpool (Kirknewton)
Hethpool today is a township without a village but in earlier days was far more populous. In 1296 eighteen people were assessed and their chattels valued at £48 16s 2d. The township was devastated by the Scots in 1342, 1385 and 1399, and in 1429 the lands were once more waste. (1)
NT 89702835 and NT 89732827. In the pasture fields to the east and south-east of the medieval tower at Hethpool there are some low amorphous mounds. They are not typical of the remains of a depopulated village but the presence of stone in some of them suggests that they cover the foundations of walls and possibly constitute the remains of the medieval village of Hethpool. Apart from the tower all the existing buildings in the vicinity are modern. (2)
