Tree trunk coffins from Featherstone (Featherstone)

[Area NY 681623] In 1825, during the draining of a swampy field, five wooden coffins were found, one of which was presented to the Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle and the others to Featherstone Castle. (2)

Two more coffins were found in 1859 and 1863. In 1869 others were located but only one was uncovered. The field is at Wyden, Wydon, or Wythen Eals (1) farmhouse [Wydon Eals OS 6 inch 1920-46] on land which is also known as 'Temple Land' (1) and 'Deadman's Shaw'. (3)

See illustration card.

Mr J F Bowden, tenant of Wydon Eals farm indicated the traditional area of the finds, at NY68216250, but said that he had never heard of the names 'Deadman's Shaw' and 'Temple Land'. At Featherstone Castle there are four coffins, one in fragments, and all minus their lids. (4)
