Cup marked stone (Hartleyburn)

NY 63876131. About 248m OD on a rough pasture covered rocky ridge is a cup marked stone. The ridge has been partly quarried away and this stone is on an outcrop on its north side. It measures 2.0m by 2.0m and is 1.8m high.
The cupmarks are on its flat top surface and there are at least eight all measuring 0.05m diameter and 0.02m deep. There are no rings. The marks form a symmetrical pattern and are too well formed to be caused by weathering. See photographs. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (1)

The site was recorded in a Rock Art survey carried out by the North of the Wall Tynedale Archaeology Group as part of the Beyond the Wall: Edges Green Project. The site was recorded as Hartleyburn Common 1a. Outcrop on an east-west quarried ridge with 8 cups, 6 clustered towards the northern end. Smaller depressions appear within the larger grain eroded bands which may not be man-made (2)
