Lime kiln at Barhaugh (Knaresdale with Kirkhaugh)
Kiln (disused). (1)
Collapsed lime kiln, some stonework visible. (2)
Now survives as an earthwork, projecting slightly from a natural platform about 15m uphill of a field gate and track. The earthwork is 2.5m high, 3m diameter. The front of the kiln is entirely gone, and only a small quantity of heat-reddened stone demonstrates that a kiln formerly stood here. A 0.5m high fragment of drystone wall visible in the north side is not thought to be part of the kiln. At the top of the hill, about 100m above and east of site, is a dilapidated series of small weathered quarries; small circular depressions of about 2m diam with an earthwork to 0.2m or less may represent the remains of early clamp kilns. (3)
Lime kiln. (4a)
Marked as old on 2nd edition mapping. (4b)
Barhaugh Lime Kiln, was collapsed, with only a little stonework visible in August 1976. (4c)
