Great Heaplow mining spoil (Knaresdale with Kirkhaugh)
A large finger dump of mining spoil projects from the hillside below a level cut into the sandstone outcrop some 300m south-west of Whitley Castle Roman fort. The level first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1899 as a 'Lead Level' and as an 'Old Coal Level' on the 3rd edition of 1922. Lead processing waste is clearly visible around the base of the dump. The has previously considered to be a possible Roman signal station.
