Holymire bastle (Knaresdale with Kirkhaugh)
Holymire bastle was built in the post-medieval period. The bastle is used as a barn today, and has been incorporated into an adjacent 19th century building. (1)(2)
The farmstead at Holymire remained in occupation through much of the later 18th and 19th centuries; during this period the original bastle was heightened and extended to the north-west to form a long range, comprising a house and barn. (3)
A programme of historic building recording was carried out on 5 November 2014 at Holymire as part of the North Pennines Altogether Archaeology project. (4)
