Longstone lighthouse and the keeper's cottage were built in 1826 by David Alexander for Trinity House. It was enlarged in the later 19th century and repaired in 1952 after damage sustained in World War II. It was the home of Grace Darling who famously rescued people from the wreck of the Forfarshire Steamer in 1838. The tower stands 85ft (25.9m) high and is painted red and white. The lantern murette is unique and probably dates from 1776. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
