West Sinkside Iron Age homestead (Kirknewton)

'NT 882264' West Sinkside. Approximately half of a small, circular enclosure, 130ft in diameter, enclosed by a single palisade, the trench for which is still visible as a groove, with traces of a small upcast mound. One possible hut-site is marked by a shallow scoop. The remainder of the site has been ploughed out. (Palisaded enclosures are generally assigned, by Jobey, to the pre-Roman Iron Age). (1)

Probably the remains of a small Iron Age homestead, as described, at NT 88202628. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2)

Roughly half of a circular palisaded enclosure is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1948. The enclosure is defined by a single narrow palisade trench which describes a semi-circle about 40m in diameter. The site is bisected by a post-medieval sod cast dyke and the south west sector has been destroyed by ridge and furrow ploughing. The site was surveyed in the 1960s but has since been overplanted with trees. (3)
