Prehistoric Flint Site (Alnmouth)
A number of pieces of worked flint have been found here. They include several microliths, small flint flakes used to make larger tools. They were found on a raised beach. This is an area of land, which used to be on the coastline. However, over time the sea level has dropped leaving the site raised above the modern coast. The flints probably date to the Mesolithic period. In this period people often lived on the coast, collecting wild food, such as fish and shellfish.
