Craster is first recorded in documents in 1242, when it was a member of the barony of Embleton. A number of medieval documents record the number of people liable for tax. The medieval village lay next to Craster Tower but by the 18th century the lands were enclosed and belonged to the Craster family. The present village lies dates to the later 18th century and is focused around the harbour.
