Medieval chapel at Howick (Longhoughton)

(NU 24841740). There was a chapel at Howick before 1158, of which the first recorded incumbent was Asket the Priest. The benefice of Howick was the possession of the Convent of Durham until the time of the Dissolution, and after that time of the Dean and Chapter of Durham. In 1842 it became an independent benefice and is now in the gift of the Bishop of Newcastle.
The modern church dedicated to St Michael stands upon the site of the older chapel in the grounds of Howick Hall. An inscription in the church records the fact that the church was built by Sir Henry Grey in 1746 and rebuilt and enlarged by Henry, third Earl Grey in 1849. A sketch preserved in the vestry shows that the building of 1746 retains no traces of the Norman Chapel which it probably superseded. (1)

There are no traces of antiquity in the present St Michael's Church. (2)

Church includes a wall-mounted, on an exterior wall, war memorial as a sandstone tablet inscribed "1914 1918/ (NAMES)/ SEE YE TO IT THEY SHALL/ NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN". (3)
