Morwick Cup and Ring Marked rock (Jack Rock) (Warkworth)
Between the two fords over the River Coquet near Morwick Mill, [NU 20 SW 7], is a cliff, guttered with water runnels, overhanging the river. On its face, at a height of 10ft - 20ft above river level, is a series of incised figures. Some are of usual concentric form, others of a spiral form and the outer circle of another, about 1ft in diameter, is composed of dots or pits placed 2ins from each other. Discovered 1876 by Mr M H Dand. (1)
Incised rocks at the Jack Rock near Morwick: Scheduled. The incised rocks are 170 yards west of the quarry (on the south bank of the river) and the markings are of a spiral form. (3) (1)(2)(3)
NU23260442. Only three ring markings were seen on the vertical cliff face overhanging the River Coquet, each c.5 inch - 6 inch in diameter. Two were on one cliff face and the other 6 yds away. Their height above the foot of the cliff is c.15ft. Owing to the precarious nature of the site, only a small amount of the cliff could be inspected and consequently some of the ring markings referred to in Entry 1 were not seen. Small cup like depressions in the cliff face may be initial blast holes, not used, for the disused quarry is only 200m to the east. (4)
Between NU23270431 and NU23290431 a total of 15 markings were located. From west to east, were 'A', the two markings on an east face of rock, and 'B' the single marking on a north face, noted by F1.
'C' on a north face 2.5m from 'B', was a circle, 0.2m diameter, formed by 17 small cups and at 'D' were two more markings each with multiple rings, one on a north face, the other on a west face, 1.2m and 1.8m from 'C' respectively. The most impressive group, 'E', consisting of nine spiral markings was on an east face 8.3m from 'D'. See photographs. Surveyed at 1:2500. (5)
NU 23280441: Cup and Ring marked Rock. (6)
Morwick rock carvings. Spirals and other patterns carved on the cliff. Some a few feet above the river and others c.20ft above. Five basic designs:-
(a) spirals as single figures;
(b) spirals linked together;
(c) spirals with other shapes;
(d) oval grooves surrounded by cups;
(e) simple cups and rings. (7)(8)
Scheduled. (9)
A further spiral motif was found by Beckensall in Group 1. (10)
Site noted within a desk-based assessment of the area. The site is reported in this study [erroneously] to be one of only two in the county with a spiral. (11)
The river cliff/overhanging rock has been reported in the past in various publications by Stan Beckensall to include a rock shelter, but it is uncertain on what evidence - if different to the rock art - this statement is based upon. (12)
