One half of a circular stone hammerhead, or macehead, 3-1/4 inches in diameter, with hour glass perforation was found on a bye-road running from Sturton Grange to just below Hartlaw on a piece called the Flat lying between the Leazes and the Ewe Hill on Southside Farm. The stone was picked up by Master Miller on the roadside where the road had been edged [repaired at side of road], and had probably been disturbed out of the road. This object is not earlier than the Bronze Age.

Mr E Miller, my uncle, now lives near Rothbury. The piece of road known as the Flat is that portion just to the east of the old quarry. (3)

Area centred NU 20950603. Position of road known as the Flat was indicated by Mr Green on map. The macehead is now in the Black Gate Museum and is classified as belonging to the Bronze Age. (4)

This item falls into Rankines category of Mesolithic maceheads with hour-glass perforation. (5)
