Site Details

Steel End (Holy Island)

This small site below the fort contains a large midden. The remains include animal bones, charcoal and flints. Scientists have also found the remains of rye, a kind of grain. The lowest levels of the midden are probably of late prehistoric date, though upper layers may be of Anglo-Saxon date. This is a Scheduled Monument.
