Kippy Heugh defended settlement (Easington (Northumberland))

(NU 12613466) Camp.

An irregular-shaped enclosure with single rampart. (2)

Listed as pre-Roman Iron Age univallate (Forts, settlements and enclosures). (3)

The earthwork is situated on the top of a level plateau surrounded by crags, and is formed by an earth stone bank, 0.5m high, which follows the edge of the plateau. The entrance is at the east end, and a hut circle, 7m diameter, and a low earth and stone bank, 0.2m high, are the only internal features. Surveyed at 1:2500. (4)

Condition unchanged. The position is clearly defensive, but the work, even on the vulnerable east side, is of no great strength. This together with a probable stone-founded hut circle suggests a small Iron Age/Romano-British settlement. (5)

Scheduled. (6)
