Budle lime kiln (Bamburgh)

Lime kiln at Budle Bay
Lime kiln at Budle Bay
Lime kiln in poor condition. One of the three arches has collapsed; constructed of rubble and brick. Pot filled with rubble from collapsed arch. (1)

Additional reference. (2)

Substantial remains survive but the kiln is in fairly poor condition and one of the three access arches has collapsed. Multi-angular frontage wall facing south with three access arches and wing wall to the east. Construction is largely of whin rubble and occasional other stone types. Access arches are round-headed with brick voussoirs, diminishing to a second segmental arch above draw holes, none of which are visible. One central plot, circular in plan, infilled and of uncertain profile. Tightly curving earth loading ramp runs from adjacent to trackway and up to loading platform. (3)

Remains of a post medieval limekiln are visible as earthworks on air photographs, centred at NU 1537 3533. The monument appears to be still extant on the latest 1974 ULM vertical photography. (4a)
