Iron Age hillfort west of Elwick (Belford with Middleton)

Cropmarks of a sub-circular enclosure, possibly a defended site, were recorded from the air in 1978 at NU 105374. (1)

Aerial photographs show cropmarks of a circular multi-ditched enclosure with two hut circles inside. (2)

The hillfort measures 178m NW-SE and 131m SW-NE, but part of the north-east section appears to have been removed by ploughing. Three ditches are recorded with what appears to be an inner palisade slot. A hut circle, 10m across, lies in the interior. This is a typical example of a small defended site, possibly exhibiting evidence for mor than one phase. (3)

An Iron Age multiple enclosure fort, an internal curvilinear enclosure, a round house (domestic) and a number of pits are visible as cropmarks on air photographs. The multiple enclosure fort located is sub-circular in plan and consists of four large ditches. The outermost dich measures approximately 194m in diameter. A narrower internal section of ditch may represent a palisade. A curvilinear enclosure at NU 1047 3735 may represent an earlier phase of construction at the site. A round house (domestic) at NU 1051 3733 has a diameter of approximately 11m. (4)(5a)
