Iron Age settlement (Eglingham)
(NU 16222318) Camp. (1)
Remains of a triangular camp in Camp Plantation; there have been two ramparts and a ditch on the south east side but only one rampart on north east and south west sides. Entrance is at south east where deposits of ash 3ft deep have been found. There are faint traces of an internal division. (2)
A defensive earthwork of triangular shape with natural defences on the north and south west sides - the north side has an added defence in a well formed bank or earth and stones 4m high and 12m wide with a probable entrance in the middle of the bank. The north west corner has been removed by an old disused quarry, the south west side is purely natural except at the south end where a probable entrance 6m wide is visible. The bank of earth and stones on the south east side varies in height from 1.5m to 3m and has an average width of 12m - an opening in this side is modern. There is no trace of the alleged ditch and second rampart on the side. A bank of stones 3m wide and 0.4m high can be traced in the interior (see plans) but no internal dwellings are visible. (3)
Listed under pre-Roman Iron Age univallate (forts, settlements and enclosures). (4)
Both the construction, and elevated position of the work support Jobey's Iron Age classification. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (5)
Schedueld. (6)
Site visit in October 2016 noted the site was in good condition, although covered by dense plantation woodland. (7)
NU 163 232. Camp Plantation, North Charlton. Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 0.40ha. (8a)
NU 162 231. North Charlton camp. Scheduled No ND/526. (8b)
