St Maurice's Well (Ellingham)
(NU 17452553) St Maurice's Well. (1)
The spring or well of St Maurice is mentioned in a deed signed by Mabel Grenville (living 1181).
The well is approached by a spiral flight of stone steps. (2)
St Maurice's Well is a small stone built recess built into the side of the stream bank. The opening to the recess is roughly shoulder headed, indicative of a medieval origin, but there is insufficient evidence to confirm that this is the well referred to in the deed mentioned above. The lintel of the opening has been inscribed, but only the letters 'IM' are now legible. The wall is approached by a flight of stone steps of which only a few at the top and bottom remain.
Water still issues from the wall. See photograph. Published survey (25 inch) correct. (3)
No change. (4)
