Alnwick Moor bell pits (Edlingham)

Alnwick Moor Bell Pits. Scheduled. An area of 16th or 17th century bellpits. Easily discernible features. The pattern of the pits follows the Scremerston Coal measures. Spoil heaps around the pits can be seen.
Early coal mining ventures were an important facet in the early development of small industrial 'concerns' and thus a factor in the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Few remaining examples except in marginal land. Coal supply valuable for lime burning and thus in the agricultural growth of the area. (1)

NU 132100 Alnwick Moor bell pits. Two star rated. (2)

Over 100 shafts lie on this area of upland, the largest concentration of bell pits in the North East. The shafts vary enormously in size and shape: some with collars of spoil, others surrounded by flat landing platforms and there are also ephemeral remains of gin circles and buildings. The archaeological importance of the site includes the evidence of pit top arrangements and undisturbed underground galleries. (3)

Scheduled. (4)

NU 134100. An extensive area of bell pits on Alnwick Moor where the Scremerston coal measures outcrop. Recommended as Schedule. (5a)

NU 130 100. Alnwick Moor bell pits. Scheduled No ND/586. (5b)
