Bronze Age hoard (Denwick)
In 1726 a hoard of bronze weapons was found in the Old Park, about a mile north west of Alnwick. The discovery was made by a mason excavating for rock at a depth of 18 inches. (From the above description Old Park was apparently part of the present Hulne Park).
The hoard consisted of 20 swords, 16 spearheads and 42 celts. The swords were leaf-shaped and 18" long. The spearheads were socketed, and some had narrow wings (illustration shows leaf shaped spearhead without loops. Of Class V (2) (sub division not determinable from illustration)) while in others the wings were wider and cut through or eyed (probably also Class V with lunate openings in the wings (2)). The celts are socketed and looped. Some of the weapons were obtained by Gale (early antiquarian) but the others disappeared (1). (1)(2)
