Ellsnook Tumulus (Rennington)
(NU 18221876) Tumulus (Beaker found AD 1921). (1)
Excavated August 1921 when a cist 27-1/2ins x 18ins x 8ins deep internally was found; in it was a beaker, 8ins high, 6ins diameter at mouth and 3-3/16ins at the base, of Abercromby type A-C. The beaker was given to the Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle on 31/5/1933. (2)
A round barrow much mutilated by tree planting situated on level ground overlooking lower ground to the south. Apparent diameter 15m, height 1m. No ditch. Slight hollow in centre and probable excavation trench in south west quadrant. Beaker now in Blackgate Museum, Newcastle. Accession No 1933.2. (3)
Beaker listed as a Bell Derivative. (4)
Barrow in poor condition. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (5)
Site visit in October 2016 noted the barrow was visible as an earthwork but appears in poor condition as it has been covered by plantation woodland since at least the 19th century. (6)
