There are two historic landscapes at Swarland Park, one overlying the other. The earliest was laid out in the early 19th century. Trees were planted to represent the Battle of the Nile. The two gate lodges, a cottage, some buildings at Home Farm and some animal shelters were built at the same time. Between 1934 and 1939 a settlement was built here to accommodate unemployed craftsmen from Tyneside.
