Hazon (Newton-on-the-Moor and Swarland)
NU 193045 Deserted medieval village at Hazon. (Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1958)). (1)
Hazon now consists of Hazon Mill and three widely dispersed farms with associated workers' cottages. The only indications of depopulation in the vicinity occur in the south west part of a pasture field to the north of Hazon farm. (Area NU 192047). In a narrow, generally disturbed area, bounded by rig-and-furrow on the north east side, two isolated building steadings can
be identified but it is likely that they represent minor shrinkage of the present Hazon farm complex rather than the site of a village. Any village was probably of the non-nucleated type. (2)
Haysand deserted medieval village. Documentary references: 1242, 1296, 1607, 1720. The site of the village is occupied by farmbuildings. Some old enclosures to east of farm-hamlet. Broad ridge and furrow. Old village survived until 19th century, reorganised in mid-19th century. (3)
