Fenhamhill cropmark enclosure (Kyloe)
[NU 06984131] Two circular, concentric soil-marks, external diameter approximately 140m. (1)
The site falls on the flat summit of a hillock called Piper's Hill, and is well suited for the local type of Iron Age enclosure which the aerial photograph initially suggests, but there is no ground evidence for an earthwork. The southern quadrant of the soil-marks can be identified with a slight hollow way, elsewhere, they approximate to the contour of the hill-top, and there is nothing visible to account for them. (2)
NU 069412. Fenhamhill cropmark enclosure. Visible on aerial photographs. (3)(4)
An excavation and watching brief revealed that the enclosure survives as an earthwork in the field north of the farm outbuildings, comprising two banks with a ditch between. (5)
Additoinal reference. (6)
An Iron Age/Roman multivallete hillfort is visible as an earthwork and cropmarks on air photographs, centred at NU 0697 4130. The hillfort has at least two external ditches and an external bank visible as an earthwork to the south. The maximum internal dimension of the enclosure is 91m. The feature may be associated with a circular enclosure to the immediate north west (HER 4127). The earthwork element of the feature appears to be still extant on the latest 1995 Ordnance Survey vertical photography. (7a)
