Cropmarks (Lowick)
Measuring c.70m north-south x 55m east-west. The perimeter is marked by a ditch and the north and south sides are straight. East and west sides are bowed outwards. Entrance in the east, possibly also in west. One probable house circle visible inside. Iron Age/Romano-British. (1)
[NU 0317 3999] A single-ditched curvilinear enclosure occurs as a cropmark on sloping ground above the Low Burn at 65m AOD. The enclosure is sub-circular in shape and has a maximum overall diameter of c 65m with an internal area of c. 0.2ha. The most likely position for an entrance is on the south-east facing side. Although no signs of habitation are visible within the enclosure it is probable that this is a settlement of the Iron Age or Roman periods. (2)(3a)
Aerial photograph references. (3b-d)
The site has been mapped from the air as part of the Milfield Geoarchaeology Project. (See archive object MD000298). (3)
This is the southernmost one of three similar enclosures which are spaced roughly equidistantly along the western side of Low Burn. The other two lie beyond the border of the Milfield Mapping Project and so have yet to be transcribed or formally recorded. (3e)
