Detchant was a member of the barony of Muschamp (Wooler). 1296: 12 taxpayers. A fortalice was recorded there in 1415. Armstrong's map of 1769 shows a small village on a turn in the Great North Road. Comprised two rows of buildings orientated east-west. RAF aerial photographs show ridge and furrow north and south of the village site. A bank delimiting the village is also visible. (2)
