Kyloe Camp (Kyloe)
(NU 05163887) Camp. (1)
A fort, some 127 yards by 78 yards, abutting the edge of a cliff. It is formed by two crescentic stone ramparts 50 yards apart, the inner from 3ft to 7ft and the outer 2ft high, with an entrance on the east side. There are several hut circles within the enclosure. (2)
Listed as pre-Roman Iron Age multivallate (forts, settlements and enclosures). (3)
A Neolithic axe head, which fell from the fort after a blast at the quarry below, was donated to the Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle on July 31st 1929. (4)
Some mutilation and reduction of the ramparts has been caused by afforestation, but the fort, as a whole, is in fair condition. Only one hut circle is now identifiable as a slight scoop into the rising ground of the interior, bounded on the downhill tip by closely set orthostats. A second entrance in the inner rampart to the north-west may also be original. Published survey (6 inch) revised. (5)
NU 052 388. Kyloe Crags. Listed in gazetteer as a multivallate hillfort covering 0.50ha. (6a)
NU 052 388. Kyloe camp. Scheduled No ND/438. (6b)
