The remains of a row of pits have been found in Wooperton Quarry. It was at least 60m long and includes 33 pits. It continued at both ends into areas not recorded by archaeologists. A remarkable amount of early Roman pottery has been found in these pits. Traces of possible buildings, also of Roman date, have been found nearby as well as a possible Bronze Age cremation pit. This site is unusual, as pit alignments are usually of prehistoric date. The features found so far appear to suggest they are on the edge of a settlement, possibly military, associated with the Devil's Causeway Roman road.
