Devil's Causeway (Roddam; Cheviotside)

The probable remains of the Roman road known as the Devil's Causeway have been found in Wooperton Quarry. Archaeologists uncovered a pair of ditches, which may have run on either side of the road as well as a series of quarry pits. (1-4)

An alignment of ditches and pits, possibly a Roman roadside quarry, are visible as cropmarks on air photographs. The features run from NU 0508 2056 to NU 0505 2065 and are on almost the same alignment as The Devil's Causeway but it appears that they are not part of the road. (5a)
