New Bewick (Bewick)
A series of cropmarks can be seen on aerial photographs of this site. A number of boundaries, enclosures and eight roughly rectangular marks can be seen. Excavation took place on some of these sites in the 1980s. One of the rectangular pits was shown to be a grubenhaus, a small Anglo-Saxon building with a sunken floor. Finds included between 20 and 30 loomweights and four pieces of pottery. This site was probably an early Anglo-Saxon settlement. Signs of settlement from this period are rare in Northumberland.
