Stone Cross (Bewick)

(NU 06342202). (2) AD 1253, Henry III granted the monks of St Albans the right to hold a market at Bewick on Thursdays. The remains of the Market Cross found (1874-1886) in a field near the chapel slightly north-west of the cross erected (1874) in memory of John Charles Longlands. (1)

Found in the field, and near to the acute angle formed by the Wooler and Chillingham roads. (2)

NU 06352201. A portion of a probable medieval cross shaft stands by the guide post at above junction. Dimensions: section 0.4m x 0.2m; height (above ground) 0.7m; edges chamfered.
