Bewick Hill cup and ring marks (Bewick)

(NU 078215) Sculptured Rocks. Cup and Ring Marks. (1)
There are five inscribed rocks; (1) near to the outer rampart and eastern entrance to Old Bewick camp (NU 02 SE 7) is one with 5 figures traceable; (2) one 20x to the north and close to the rampart; (3) a large block 9-1/2ft x 6-1/2ft c.30x east of the camp; (4) one c.100x east of the camp and (5) one 100x from the camp. (2)
Perambulation of the area revealed five rocks with markings and possibly a sixth.
'A' NU07762151. Small rock with cup marks only.
'B' NU 07762154. Large rock with five cup and ring marks (identifiable with (1) in T4 (3)).
'C' NU 07812158 A large rock the upper surface of which is covered with cup and ring marks. There is also an oval-shaped basin 0.5m x 0.4m x 0.15m deep, apparently artificial. There are also cup marks on the sides of the rock.
'D' NU 07722160. Small rock with cup marks only (embedded in outer bank of fort).
'E' NU 07722158. Rock with single cup and ring mark.
'F' NU 07722159. Rock with possible cup and ring mark, but badly weathered.

Resurveyed at 1:2500. (4)
Old Bewick. NU 07812158 (site 1), NU 07762154 (site 2), NU 07712160 (site 3), NU 077215 (sites 4 and 5). Outcrops with cups and rings, except sites 4 and 5 which are portable cup and ring marked stones now lost. Three sets of carvings visible, and reports of minor ones in 19th century. Two carvings that cannot be traced today were described by Tate, one was sent to Alnwick Castle Museum. (5)
Old Bewick. Rock motifs focus on a large prominent outcrop. (6)
Further motifs found at Bewick Hill at c.NU 07812158. In the quarry itself (now removed), on the quarry edge and on the continuation of the outcrop northward. (7)
A series of seven cup and ring marked stones or possible cup marked stones were recorded during an Archaeological Services Durham University survey of Old Bewick Hillfort and its environs during March 2012. Six of these panels are located to the east of the hillfort, with a series of the prehistoric rock art panels incorporated into an earth and stone boundary to the east of the hillfort. (8)
