Newtown Mill, Lilburn (Tillside)
Newtown Mill, Chillingham. NU 044240. Little of the actual mill now remains, the buildings being used for ordinary farm purposes. Just behind the mill is the site of a gathering pond fed from Lilburn Burn, a tributary of the Till. The sluices and the wheel pit can still be seen and it is evident that this was an overshot wheel of some 18ft by 5ft. Most of the machinery has been removed for scrap but parts of the stone nut disengagers remains. Documentary evidence of cornmill in 1827, 1855 and 1887. (1)
