West Lilburn deserted medieval village (Tillside)
'NU 022243' Deserted medieval village at West Lilburn. [Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1946)]. (1)
Apart from the pele and chapel (NU 02 SE 4 and 5) at NU 022241, there are no visible remains of any depopulation at West Lilburn. Any village, however, may well have been destroyed by the emparkment of the modern Lilburn Tower. (2)
NU 022242. Documentary references: 1296, 1323, 1336, 1580, 1665, 1821. The tithe map suggests that the old village site was retained until the mid-19th century. The old mansion and the nearby houses were removed when the new John Dobson house was erected in the second quarter of the 19th century, at which time the old village was planted with trees. (3)
