People carved a stone cross between 1000 and 1500 years ago, during what archaeologists call the early medieval period. The shaft of the cross survives, standing on a hill north west of Newtown Mill. Archaeologists think the cross was moved here from near a road at an unknown date in the past. The Hurl Stone is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
