Prehistoric enclosures on Fowberry Moor (Tillside)
A number of prehistoric monuments can be seen at this site. A large enclosure surrounded by several earth banks may be the remains of an Iron Age hillfort. Attached to one side of it was a second smaller enclosure with the traces of a small stone building. This might be a Roman settlement. On the outer rampart of the hillfort a number of large stones with carved cup and ring marks can be seen. These carving were probably made in the early Bronze Age or late Neolithic. The purpose of these names is not clear though they may have had a religious function. This is a Scheduled Monument protected by law.
